Everyone is wearing a mask in the hospital!! And it's not the ordinary one, it's N95!!! Freaking shit. How are we supposed to breathe in those 'poreless' masks? Not to mention the hot humid weather here, we will be breathing our own exhaled carbon dioxide. Pssttt...in a more practical point of view (to women and metrosexual men *gasp!*), our moisturiser/foundation will definitely be smeared and leave ugly trails of marks on our faces when we take the mask off!
For your information, mask N95 looks like this:

Imagine getting an innocent flu and I will be out from my job for days???Geez. Now I am a bit worried. I need to work. I am hardly going to make ends meet this month..so I need the $$$!!!!
Singaporeans are No1 in:
Kiasu-ness (everyone knows that) and
Kiasi-ness. I guess SARS scared the shit out of them. The population is not large enough and epidemics like these will definitely wipe them out (not to mention that nowadays the younger generation is not keen to make babies to strenghten the country with more
LOCAL manpower).
Anyway,

finally picked up my parcel from Hairboutique.com USA!
Ta-Dah~

Bain De Terre White lotus reparative reconstructor. Smells very very soothing .
Back to Nature Frainforest volumizing conditioner.
Oh OH,this is very unique:

it's
Bain De Terre Sugar &Fig scalp massage scrub.
It smells soooo delicious that I hope it comes as perfume instead...No, as dessert.
Been out for K-night with HM. Geez, I am getting really really outdated. I can't sing most of the latest pop songs out there. The only song I can ACTUALLY sing is ' 忘不了 ' HAHA, I am just joking! But it's half-true though. :/

Random

Hey, split slimming images.

That was how I gobbled down my dinner.

HM.
It's amazing how throughout these years we maintained a good relationship. Of course we do argue and fight like normal people, but we still remain as good quality friends despite our differences.

When the young Chinese man asked me: Is this the first time you remove stitches
with a blade???
I nodded.
he turned to me: 'Don't be scared. Don't worry. Just do it, I will be fine.'in a shaky voice
and obvious tremors in his limbs.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
When I am allowed to observe the woman who was in labour, pounding her fists
into the bed and groaned while trying to take deep breaths:
she turned to me and mused in a sweaty and exhaustive tone:
'TRUST ME. It doesn't look as BAD as you see.'
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
When I couldn't seem to draw any blood from his vein,
he voluntarily pointed at a bigger juicier one and offered: LOOK, let's try this one.
You will definitely get this. If you can't, I still have plenty on my other arms.'
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
When a pair of heroic parents grabbed the uncooperative kid's legs and hands
who was struggling like mad and urged: QUICK , doc. DO (inject) it now. He can't
move now.'
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
When the helpful mother tried to show her son to take a deep breath when I was
listening to his chest and ended up hyperventilating and getting dizzy +
nauseous.

Almost all of them blessed me GOOD LUCK before leaving the room.
I guess I will be lucky after all the blessings I received.

How do you deal with stress?
Some people get agitated,
Some people get weepy,
Some people get bitchy,
Some people go nutz.
As for me..... I LAU SAI.
This 2 weeks of working in sub-specialities areas renders me literally toilet-handicapped.
Seriously, ENT and Opthalmology clinics are too much for me.
Not talking /understanding their languages just isolate me to a mere insignificant dumb ass.
For once, I felt so fragile and retarded. Gone with my usual confidence and charisma. MUAHAHA.
I lau sai every morning before clinics.
That reminds me of the trauma I went through when observing a normal vaginal child birth....
The doctor urged the lady to PUSH PUSH PUSH...
Subconsciously I tended to bear down myself..like what you do when trying to make a hard solid poo...
I ended up LAU SAI for ONE BLOODY WHOLE DAY.
I guess that's my reaction to stress..
Which reminds me of....*sheepisH* how I used to bully my little brother.
He was 12 months old.
I used to stand quietly in front of him with my face about an inch away from his, and at that very moment just right before he opened his eyes from the usual nap , I would go BOOO!! Not surprisingly, he startled and cried.
I guess I was a bit over the top when I got told off by ah ma because his poo was GREEN following the emotional torture.
You know...biliary reflex. Your gall bladder tends to secrete bile in stresses like this.
Imagine when a person is rushed into the ED for cardiac arrest.
Don't look out for me.
The first instinct of mine is to rush towards the toilet instead of doing all the right things.
*slap*
Oh well, let's hope that by the end of the week I will kiss goodbye to my LAU SAI Syndrome and laughing my head off in the plane to Christchurch.

I have a super rough week.
I started my week by being told off in Opthalmology clinics.
I forgotten most of my stuff.
What do you expect from someone who has just a week of Opthalmology last year?
Anyway, that's my fault. I should have done some study.
Ok, that's fine, I got over it. The consultant sort of make up to me at the end anyway. ....I must say that it's nice of him, in his..own way.
Then I overslept and bunked my ENT clinics. Someone is very unhappy about this.
Following that, I got snapped by one migrainous young girl in After Hours Doctors. ' Fucking shit. Just give me the fucking Pethidine!!!' Yeah right, and maybe a full dosage of MORPHINE too?
She apparently felt so much better after 2 minutes of Pethidine injection when Pethidine takes much more longer to be effective. DRUG SEEKER.
And I ended my week by having a chap around my age came in complaining of testicular pain.
*headache*
I have to act cool bananas and examined his..'banana'.
*SIEN*
How interesting can my week be?
Syl was talking about wanting to take a year off after graduating.
I am talking about wanting to study LAW after medicine.
CRISIS ALARM is going off.

We are trained to encourage women to breastfeed.
Breast milk is the 'cheap', 'sterile','yummy' and 'accessible' at any time (Yeah, like your breast leaks due to any sound stimuli- a baby crying during lactation).
From time to time, we have been constantly trying to insert the RIGHT mentality into the women. Some nurses /doctors even despised women who choose to bottle feed their baby, saying that it's an erroneous idea and baby will have higher risk of ending up to be obese, more GI infections, asthmatic , ear infections and so on.
So, some smart people managed to come out with a poster conveying the message : GET YOUR BABY ON TO YOUR BREASTS.

Honestly, whenever I pass by the ward, I cringe at the sight of the poster.
First of all , they chose an African baby.
To me, an African baby= malnourished= hungry=gobbling down anything...including the breasts.
Hence, it seems very much to me that the baby is GNAWING the breast instead of sucking.
OUCHHHHHHHHHHH~~~ ( some mothers will experience this definitely)
That put me off of breastfeeding, period.

So far, my clinics never fail to amuse me everyday.
It's more like medical services targeted at a completely different ethnic group, 50% of the attendants are Chinese. Unexpectedly, that's when the funny stories start to unfold themselves.
1st day :
Overwhelmed by seeing Chinese people, especially those cute old couples from China that argue or fight in front of you, and demand you to judge who's the right party.
Met a black man who asked me whether I am married or not. My GP got irritated and asked him to be professional. He nodded in acknowledgement and popped another random statement: I LOVE CHINA WOMEN.
One word: *****
2nd Day:
This 60 yr plus lady from China showered me with praises like how young and pretty I am bla bla bla . I sheepishly thanked her (and secretly or should I say, obviously was on clouds nine ) when she added the dreadful statement: Everytime I see people like you I got envious and feel like cutting your face with a knife. I can't help it!
.....................................................................................................
3rd Day:
Another woman from China again brought her father to consultation. She ended up writing her name and phone in a piece of paper asking me to call her when I am free. She wanted to cook me SI CHUAN foods! WOOHOO! I love hot spicy foods. She wanted my cell phone so that she can pick me up to the Saturday Dogs Competition or something.
I would love to say yes, but relunctantly, I have to keep within my professional boundaries. OH well.
4th Day
This poor Indian lady came in with complaints of hyperpigmentation. Unfortunately, she is very dark ( like the South Indians), it is very difficult to identify those what she called 'black rashes' on her face. She pointed at me and said she used to be as fair as me until she got the rashes. GP replied her flatly that: you are just DARK.
For 30 seconds I felt like laughing when I saw the look in her face. Honestly, I sympathize her still.
5th Day
This Malaysian woman came in to check if she is HIV or STD positive. She got over- excited when we passed her negative and started to talk about her stories.
She hold my hands and told me matter-of-factly:
you know, who knows how many women our guys sleep with. But sometimes..like. ..one day you know..this guy asked me to his place for a visit, so you know la...it was raining so heavily so I went in loh. Then he quickly took of his clothes wanted to have sex with me you know..haiyaa.. I was scared..but what can I do, you know or not.. (NO I DON"T, and DON"T WANT TO KNOW), his stairs is so high, what if he pushed me down the stairs if I hit him?? My brain will get burst..so not worth it if I die right..he can say I accidentally fail down right...haiyoo..my brain will burst you know...will BURST!! That stairs so HIGH, so HIGH, will burst you know. I tell you , young lady, if somebody wants to have sex, you cannot fight, just give it to him lah! At least if you got STD you can get treated, if your brain burst, can't even live lah! Like that no good right!'
It's good to know that my brain still works on its own.
But geez...

Things can get quite tricky when it comes to playing smart but 'safe'.
I hate bedside tutorials.
It's crucial to PICK the right words.
An extremely HUGE woman was lying in the bed breathing laboriously.
First, start with
inspection. So you sort of have a running commentary of what you are looking for, what you are doing and that kind of shit. Just to acknowledge the boss that you know something.
'She is obviously in distress, tachypnoea, pale...'
What else. (Interrogation)
'er....ehm....' Obviously he is expecting me to say that she is overweight which is a great risk factor for most of the diseases you can think of. But how on earth am I going to say that in front of the patient? That she is morbidly obese?
'ah....BMI over 30!' I prayed silently that I've made it as subtle as possible.
'She is
obese. Do you agree with me?' Boss said it out flatly.
The patient frowned. I cringed.
'Do you agree with me, Zia?'
What is his problem?
Weighing out all the pros and cons of annoying my boss, I solemnly nodded and cautiously avoid any eye contact with that poor woman. Wa kia si mah!
I know I spoiled the bonding we may possibly shared.
Scenario 2
A little boy looking quite unusual appeared in the clinic. He has flat nose and big slanted eyes. I swear that he has some kind of inherited genetic disorders of some sort. So excitedly I commented that he is
dysmorphic-looking. The father frowned. I looked up only to bump into a mirror image of that kiddo.
Obviously he gets the looks from his father, who looks funny but entirely normal. His father threw daggers at me throughout the whole consultation.
I am hated once again.
Scenario 3:
This lady came to Emergency department with recurrent syncope. A plump short lady with baggy clothes tagged alone. She is quite tomboyish with pierced lips and nose. Throughout the consultation she was hugging the patient, french-kissing her at times ( shows no discretion at all, waiyah!), and stroke her on the hair. 'We live together.' She said. So, obviously I thought, they are homosexuals. Not unusual at all nowadays, oh well, I thought.
While typing out the discharge summary, I typed in 'living with her partner' under the social history section. This tomboy then confronted me looking absolutely offended: Hey doc, she is just my friend, ok? We are not partners. And I am straight. You hear me,
straight.'
All eyes laid on me.
For a moment I thought the world may just paused for my sake, so that I can just sink into the ground and pretend that I never ever done medicine.

And I will be a doctor.
I am scared.
I am quite comfortable hiding underneath the big doctors' wings.
It's time to come out soon.
I still can't fly. But I thought I can.
Simple mistakes can lead to big troubles,
for a person like me who has butter-fingers,
it's NO GOOD at all.
NO GOOD.

The interviewer did 89.9% of the talking ( voluntarily).
That's not in the listed scenarios in 'TIPS FOR JOB INTERVIEWS' which I have been googling away.

Sorry for being unusually quiet for the past few weeks.
I am too busy catching up with the pace of my life the velocity I would like it to be. Not too much of some random efforts to save the world ( HAHA!) but squandering away my previous lovely free time and feeling sorry for myself.
We were having five hours of CPR --Cardiopulmonary resuscitation workshop this afternoon. I have such a *()(*@#( time trying to ventilate the mannequin. I put on the filter, and blew it hard through it. What's wrong with that?Wil has no problem breathing in good volume of air into the plastic mouth wad!!!! He stared hard at its chest hoping to see any glimpse of movement when I was 'kissing' it. Eventually he concluded that my anatomy of my mouth, I mean, lips disadvantage me. I must be a BAD kisser. 'It's just too hard to get a good seal of your lips around it, aren't you?' He cracked.
*FUMED*HOI! That;s over-generalization, OK?
The American instructor made me do it on 2 different mannequins, trying to console me that it may be just the particular mannequin that is not doing very well. Same thing happened. She pulled me to aside and whispered: LOOK, it's EASY. It's just like KISSING, but without the tongue.Seal tight with your lips and blow into it. It's like KISSING, you see? KISSING!'
*BLINK BLINK*
Does she blow air into her partner's mouth during kissing?
That makes me wonder.
Anyway, after several desperate attempts, I make it!!!! Maybe I am not too bad a kisser after all!
Oh, eventually I figured out that my technique is perfect, it's just that I FORGOT TO BLOW it through the part that's not air-sealed on the filter. No wonder all my breaths leaked out.
*SLAP*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STUPIAK.
I am just SLOW in picking things up.
But hey, I am learning.

My timetable for the current run is just PERFECT. I can't stop laughing.WAHAHAHAHAHA *excuse me*
Although I have those annoying shifts in ED ( Emergency Department, not Erectile Dysfunction, JOANNE!) in the weekends, I have lots of empty slots.
Anyway.. We spent 2 hours talking about our upcoming stupid project. I ended up abandoned them half-way because I am late for my Eyebrow shaping appointment. Not surprisingly, I almost got killed as to them I am pretty ridiculous. There are 6 of us in the group including 3 geniuses. Definitely we will come out with some clever stuff with their help. So yeah!! William and I decided to be the parasites and suck their blood
The girl did a good job with shaping and tinting them. Now, I have a pair of arch-like eyebrows I drool all these while... WEEEE~ The ones that I have originally made me very depressive-looking and left most of the ones around me thinking that I have PMS most days than not... One of my close friends even told me once: Look, I know you must have a rough time. Get out of the dark zone of depression. I am here to listen and help. GeeZ.... She thought that I come from a broken family with no love and currently dating an abusive man that is fifth timing me. How bad could this be. I am afraid she may put me on PROZAC so I better get a new pair of eye brows. Now I am.....

FOXY-looking!!!
No, I am lying. That doesnt make much difference honestly but shed off the melancholic flavour of my complexion.
Thinking of leaving NZ next year.
Sick of the life here.
I want kolo mee and teh si peng for breakfast...not milk and weetbix.
I want to communicate with ah ma ah pek in teo chew or Hokkien.
I want to bargain when buying stuff and tiaw keh ly throw back the stuff if I can't get a reasonable deal ( thanks to the modeling effect I learnt from mummy)
I want to wear singlets and minis instead of wrapped up like a thick sandwich
I want to speak Mandarin!!!!!
I want to cut the queue pura pura tak tahu and bump into ppl without bother to apologize
I want to wander around the busy streets at 12 am.
I want ..I want..I want..
and the list go on and on and on...
Who will decide?
Flip a coin!!!!

ca

Instantaneously, I became well-liked among my male colleagues.
To them, I have made an absolutely righteous comment on their behalf. They reckon that I am the BRAIN in the PINKY and the BRAIN cartoon at last!!!
I got lots of appreciative and supportive hugs, with whipers in my ears that I am extremely BRILLIANT and CUTE from this group of species.
They almost kiss my toes.
The VERDICT.
Female doctors generally don't handle stress as well as the male counterparts.AGREE?
Maybe yes.
Maybe no.
The feminists will loathe at this statement, not surprisingly.
I comment this with good 'clinical' evidence and grounds, alright?
I am victimized by those hormone-raging female doctors that can't bear to give the me a piece of mind when they got stressed or agitated
*MPMMH*
She took 2 hours to complete a C section ( instead of the usual 45 minutes) , and blamed others for her difficulty to stop the uterine bleeding. (as if we are controlling the butter fingers of hers)
She shouted at others when she mistakenly took the wrong blood tubes. For goodness sake, just move the feet of yours to get another one, which is about 3 steps away from you.
She smiled sweetly or perhaps apologetically at you after 2 minutes following her outburst and have another outburst in 20 seconds.
Honestly, most of the opposite species don't lash out their stresses on anyone. Seems like some of the females don't have a slightest clue how to handle their own stresses but to let everyone around them know about it.
GEEZ, just go home and sleep! You will feel better.
Oh, did I mention I lost a couple of feminist friends?
Considering the overwhelming support and special treatments from the guys, maybe this is a good call. They actually think that I am SMART. ( Sounds like the one in Legally Blonde)

What do you think about the expression of PAIN?
S-C-R-E-A-M.
That's what women do , uhm, usually.
What about... pain PERCEPTION?
Now that's not universal.
The ward was tortured with the screaming of a woman from the delivery suite for the whole afternoon. We are very annoyed as that was distracting....and harmful to our eardrums. Frequency of more than 300 HZ, with 120 decibels? Argh.
I know, we should be more empathetic, that lady is IN LABOUR for goodness sake! BUT! That makes us wonder about the different perception women have for pain. Oh, just to mention, the lady is in maximal amount of epidural analgesia.
A lady presented to Emergency Department with a broken nail. She was screaming at the top of her lungs.
VS
A lady in renal colic. (Yes, renal colic can make a tough macho man cries)She just wringled around and crawled into a ball. She was absolutely silent with some occasional groans.
The first lady 's pain was immediately relieved with a few tablets of PARACETAMOL and she claimed to have pain rating of 20 out of 10.
Hmmmmmmm............................Interesting.
I saw a very quick delivery on Friday. I just got into the room for about 1 minute and the baby was born. The mother was pushing hard, and she did not let out a single cry/ scream. ' BRAVO. BRAVE LADY, I like.' I wondered. I was too quick to praise because as soon as the baby was out, she started to scream.
WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT?
*Clueless*
So, Simon, my colleague walked into the ward looking absolutely confused and horrified. 'WHAT is that?" "LABOUR! DOH! What do you think?' Silly man. This is the delivery suite. But come to think of it, it's hard to blame him though. That woman's screams are more like....the squeals of excitement you heard in a party or those adrenaline-rushing moments on a roller-coaster ride. Ok, I am aware that one should not comment on how a woman should scream, but at least....their screams should sound more like..?.AGONY than anything else.
Personally, I am not good in screaming. My voice is too weak to scream like that. I wonder how energy-draining that was to scream on the top of her lungs constantly for 2 hours, and if that would help the labour if the woman preserves that energy to keep pushing instead. Alright alright, *took out my Patient And Doctor Relationship Module book* I should be EMPATHETIC and UNDERSTANDING.
Most of my guy friends refuse to be in the delivery room with their wives. ' It's too traumatic for us, the guys.' WHAT THE*****! It takes two to make a woman pregnant, and all she asks is just to stay by her side in one of the most agonizing moments of her life, is that too much to ask for? That's the thing. Personally, men should experience and witness the process of the labour. The truth is, they will be more appreciative if they know that their wives are the heroines. Generally, Am Mo Langs are braver than Asians men. Most of the husbands opt to stay ( Post traumatic stress disorder will be another issue). That's not the case seen in Malaysia. Sia soi.
Anyway, it will be a long week. I am so going to study. How many times have I mentioned that already?

Next year, I am going to work officially.
This year is a year to taste life as a working doctor. Just a taste, not the REAL thing yet. Will consult Jennifer for that.
I am NOT looking forward to it. :(
I enjoy being the student.
Most of my friends are still a long way to go from graduating and when I see them worrying about studies, just studies, I am envious.
Looking back to my student life, I would say, it's memorable. Not so much of the academic stresses. Being with the people I have been, I felt thankful. You know who you are. a BIG HEARTFELT THANK YOU. Many thanks. As the year approaches to the end, old memories keep flooding back. ... especially the ones that I have been suppressing all these while. *SIGH* Now this sucks.
I am aware that the world out there is complicated and full of S***, I am not ready to conquer everything yet.
Why am I sound so blue?
Seriously, I feel like I am having post-natal depression.

It's ANZAC day.
It should be a public holiday.

But I spent my day in the ward pushing the blood trolley sucking blood from people.

Overwhelmed by the free access to needles and 'gadgets'.
My blood trolleyA few failed attempts but in majority I do suck blood!
Hoho.
Who says we should remember and moan for the soldiers that died for us today.
I say, we should remember that HIS love for us is endless and unconditional.
I make a cross-like plaster on every woman that I suck blood from, making sure that we are reminded by Jesus's blood for us today.

Like this!
And yes, I felt so much brighter.
