I am trying to complete my resignation letter.

Sigh, I know I am going to miss Singapore.

Although most of the time I feel much alone, I truly enjoy working in Singapore.

I have get used to the system of which you have to be fast and efficient, the system which relies a lot on computers, a system which ensure that everyone is at their very best at all times.

Of course, the money is good.

Most importantly, I encountered a few good quality friends who make my life in Sg bearable.

Most of my friends are against me going back to work, saying that it's 'stupidity' or 'radical'. Some of them even quoted me as ' the crazy girl who gives up her future for love.'

By the end of day, it all boils down to what I really want in life. Yes, career is crucial but to me there is something more important than career in life. I can always build my own career in my own country. Yes, it may not be as good or recognizable by other countries, but as long as I am good, I am good.

Honestly, I hope I wont regret my decision and...he promised..:)

Cant wait for another ward 48 dinner next week!!!!

Traditionally ward 48 dinners are very famous and enjoyable. First of all the restaurants chosen will be few of the top dinning areas in Singapore, and secondly the wines served are super good!!! Even a beer person like me couldn't help but got drunk over 10 glasses of fresh brewed wine last dinner.

My consultant is an endocrinologist that loves wines. He is more like a wine taster and has countless collections of good high quality wines. Every 2 months he will invite all his fellow Registrars, Medical officers and houseofficers to a great dinner and brought us his favourite wines.

This is like my 4th month in ward 48 and happily I get to attend the dinner twice!

Last dinner was at Ming Kee, an absolute gem located along MacPherson Rd. The dinner costed boss SGD671 which was pretty cheap for a full-course dinner for two tables, including a gigantic crab each, without any service charge, GST, nor corkage for unlimited usage of tall Mikasa glassess. Boss brought us a pair of Aussie whites 2007 Moss Wood chardonnay and 2004 Leeuwin Estate Art Series chardonnay. Both hail from the Margaret River wine region, and both were pale lemon yellow in color, with initial notes of citrus, lime, and minerals (more with the Leeuwin).
The senior table with registrars and consultants from ward 48

The junior table of medical officers and house officers

The junior table polishing off 4 bottles (2000 D’Arenberg Dead Arm, 1996 Haut-Bages-Liberal, Penfolds Bin 407 (vintage?), as well as a German riesling) and becoming totally disinhibited in the process. Dinesh started to talk nonsenses and staggered up to the registrar telling him stories that were quite irrelevant. He then staggered back to his table laughing and smilling inappropriately. Our big brother registrar took a peep over our table and got back to his senior table exclaiming : I think he is gone.

YH is even funnier. He kept drinking and assuring us that he wouldnt get drunk while knocking down a few wine glasses leaving our table a mess. I heard the story today that he went off to Karaoke after the dinner and passed out on the cushion. To make matters interesting, I heard this from our boss the consultant who whispered to us quietly the next morning! YH apparently was malfunctioned the next day and running to the toilet intermittently during ward round vomitting. He later developed Mallory weis tear with blood in the vomitus. My registrar prescribed him omeprazole. He was totally screwed. :)

Oh , as for me, I was drunk that night too. The boys kept serving me wine and I ended up finishing 10 glasses of them. No one really knew that I was drunk. I was sitting there obediently and smiling, not entirely disinhibited. Or maybe that's a way of disinhibition for me? The headache that came the following day was disgusting.

Overall it was a fun night mostly because we really can drink like a fish. Our boss thought this was by far the best showing from the juniors. HEHEHE...

Sometimes little things just make me happy.

I was on-call yesterday. Being on call for 36 hours on a Sunday (and public holiday some more) is just so depressing.

I stared down at my newly pedicured nails and I smiled. I felt happy. Talk about the power of pedicure! HEHEHE.

I stared at my phone thinking about the previous conversations I have with my loved ones..I felt happy.

I stared at the sumptuous dinner my registrar bought for us to celebrate Singapore's National day....I felt happy.

You know which kind of patients are most difficult to deal with?
Doctors or their relatives

There is this doctor who is hospitalized and has a non medical brother who kept bugging me.

He requested to see a senior doctor after my junior spent 15 minutes talking to him.

I attended to him feeling very shitty, knowing that this kind of relative is nothing but trouble.

His attitude was pleasant and all that but....

'Dr , I counted by brother's respiratory rate when he was sleeping. It is 24-26 per minute. It is quite fast! I am worried about Pulmonary embolism.'

I raised my eye brow, threw a few glances at the patient who was sleeping SOUND FULLY and definitely not in any form of distress at all, thinking how to explain in layman terms to this paranoid man.

'Well sir, I addressed your concern ( HELL YEAH), but you see...there isnt any symptoms suggestive of pulmonary embolism at all! You see, most of the time patient will be breathlessness, the air saturation is unsatisfactory and they will have fast heart rate if he REALLY suffers from it.'

'But...his respiratory rate is 24! It's quite fast, dont you think so. I am afraid it's a silent pulmonary embolism. I consulted my wife who is a doctor and she asked to do a chest x ray and bloods.'

For once second I felt like choking the 'kek kiang' wife. Why cant she be the doctor in charge then??!! I bet my respiratory rate is 30 now due to frustration.

'Look, pulmonary embolism is definitely at the very very bottom of my differentials.' ( and c'mon, he is fat! He probably has sleep apnoea!)

I spent 20 minutes discussing with him 101 reasons should he not worry about pulmonary embolism and hinting to him that his brother is just fat and may suffer from airway obstruction during sleeping and THAT indeed is not an emergency. He should just try to lose some weight!

5 minutes later the man requested to talk to me again!!

My junior and I locked ourselves in the doctor's room refusing to leave as the man was standing
outside waiting for us.

Finally, out of desperation, we aimed for the door, flung it open and shouted simultaneously 'COLLAPSE! COLLAPSE!LET"S GO!!" and raced to the exit, ran through a few flight of staircases and rushed to the conference room where our dinner was served.

The nurses were laughing behind us thinking that we are just a pair of clowns.

Anyway, the call went on pretty smoothly and I managed to go shopping the next day!

The little black dress, every girl needs to have one the least!!!

We dined in Kenny Rogers.

I still can smile after 36 hours being sleepless.

SL is glowing with love. Apparently she is going to begin her first real relationship soon. She is bubbling with joy. ;-)

Oh well...can't wait for weekend to come!

Everyday I am dealing with weird people. Their minds are so f***** up that I find them very difficult to love.

Case 1:

A 20 years old lady admitted to the hospital for Panadol overdose.

Reason? ' Just for fun' as she claimed.

She later lodged a complaint that the doctor never explained the side effects of Panadol to her.

?????!!!!!!

ZY later used a 18G Needle to take her blood.

She screamed in pain and demanded an explanation about the big bore needle.

'Just for fun' She smiled sweetly and walked off with a few extra big tubes of bloods.

Case 2:

A 30 yrs old man wanted to die.

He swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills, sat still for 5 minutes and called ambulance for help.

???!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was 2 am and XL was very pissed off.

" DO YOU REALLY WANT TO DIE? WHY DO YOU CALL THE AMBULANCE THEN??!!"

She scolded him for 10 minutes, catheterized him without pain killer ( ouch) and starved him for 2 nights.

Case 3:

A brother of a patient lodged a complaint that we never update him about every single

tests/procedures/plans for the patient.

So...

' Hello Mr Y, we are going to feed your sister porridge for breakfast.'

5 minutes later:

'Hello Mr Y, we are going to bring her for shower.'

2 minutes later:

'Hello Mr Y, your sister is going to go for physiotherapy.'

1 minute later:

'Hello Mr Y, your sister's physiotherapist is called MissXXX'

30 seconds later:

'Hello Mr Y, just to let you know that it will last for 30 minutes.'

Eventually, Mr Y switched off his phone for 2 whole days and never dare to confront the staffs

for anything.

Case 4:

A very unhappy friend of a patient complained that the doctor took too long to attend to the

patient who was having a fever.

He scolded the whole team ( including the doctor) for 'negligence' multiple explanations that the ward was very busy at that moment and fever in fact is not an emergency.

Family conference was held due to the big 'hoo-ha'.

Friend: ' You know..I know something about medicine too! You guys don't try to cheat me. I work in the medical field. I am a consultant!'

Doctors: ???!! (Consultant? Oh shit, we are screwed) So Mr, where do you work at?

Friend: Private hospital the Gleaneagles. I work in the cardiology department. (proudly)

Doctor A: Oh, so you are a cardiologist??!!

Friend: Consultant! Medical equipment consultant.

Doctor A: (WTF)...I see. So let me explain the patient's CXR, the reason of his fever is because of
this white patch here. He has pneumonia.

Friend: I know! This is all your fault! you serve the white pill to him earlier on right!

Doctor A: ? White pill You mean PANADOL?

Friend: YA! That's explain the white patch in the chest X ray. I am so going to complain to the head of department.

WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!

This time the doctors did not fight back. They were all busy having haemetesis and convulsions.

QUOTED FROM THE STAR:

Selangor PAS wants beer included in ban, Liu to be removed (Update)

SHAH ALAM: Selangor PAS wants the state government to include beer in its ban on the sale of alcohol in all Muslim-majority areas and state executive councillor Ronnie Liu to be removed from his post as head of local government.

The sale of alcohol is already banned in these areas, but as a beverage beer has been a grey area and is sold in 24-hour convenience stores.

When the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) enforcement unit seized 70 cans of beer from a retail outlet in Section 8, Liu got involved and got MBSA to return the beer and apologise to the owner.

Selangor PAS said that the ban will only concern Muslims and not impinge on the rights of non-Muslims, although he conceded to would have to travel farther for their fix.

It accused the DAP’s Liu of “meddling in Islamic affairs.”

Meanwhile, Liu said that new guidelines on the sale of hard liquor and beer is being drafted and would issued after a period of public consultation.

Only 24-hour convenience outlets in Sections 1 to 24 in Shah Alam, which are Muslim-majority areas, would be asked to stop the sale of beer to “respect the community,” he said.

“The matter has to be considered carefully to take into account the sensitivities of all races,” he said.

Freaking stupid.

If you are not allowed to eat pork/drink alcohol ( aka have fun) due to your religion, why are you banning the rest to do so?

It's like banning us from eating BAK GUA in front of the Muslims.

GET OVER IT.

GET OVER YOUR OWN 'HAK-HAK ISTIMEWA' and crack your brain to make Malaysia a better country instead.

Even the Americans have gotten over theirs and made the black as their president.

Today is my kid's birthday.

Oh, I refer most of my junior doctors 'my children'.

I managed to buy him a delicious peach fruit cake.

The rests were kind enough to stay back waiting for us sending a bleeder to Intensive Care Unit before we changed ourself to a happier tune and cut the cake.

WX was even more pathetic. He hugged the patient's file that he was half discharging to 2 levels above just to be in time for the cake. Oh, did I mention he took the stairs?! ' Eating cake is more important than discharging patient' as he claimed.

SL took ages to come. I texted her saying: ASAP. The cake is desaturating and haemodynamically unstable. We have to CPR soon... ( or more accurately resuscitate ourselves with the cake because we were so freaking hungry!)

We doctors tend to 'medicalize' everything nowadays.

Happy birthday kiddo, you are one year closer to death.

I worry too much.

Most of the time not about me, but others.

I was ecstatic to have my Sunday off. I dreamt of sleeping in late, waking up in noon to catch a good Starbucks coffee opposite my place and off shopping and waste some money.

To my annoyance, I ended up worrying about Sunshine who just started working.

How can he cope..
Has he accidentally 'kill' or finish anyone off...
Has he eaten his lunch...

BLA BLA BLA all that kind of crapz that a mother will be worrying when her first baby just starting Kinder garden.

I am not impressed with myself at all. It was soooooooo mentally tiring.I do not remember myself worrying so much when I first start off working, or even for my very first virgin call. :( I guess you have to pay for being much in love.

Oh well, anyway, so off my Sunday went into the drain, ended up with a argument ( or maybe I was the one scolding) and waking up the next day feeling as shitty as ever because it is Monday...again.

I don't think I can afford to have a kid. If the baby is a girl, I will start worrying about all the 'what ifs'...

What if she fall in a love with a dick? I mean, a butcher or something? I will boycot pork forever!
What if she got pregnant at age of 18?
What if she turns out to be our worst combination and I cant marry her out? What am I going to do with her?

On the other hand, if it's a baby boy there will be all the other 'what ifs' ruminating in my head:

What if he likes a nurse? ( no offence)
What if he confides in me: Mama..All I want to do is to FIX Cars!
What if he thinks that BOy George is hot and I have 2 sons instead of one daughter-in-law?

STOPPPPPPP IT.

See? I am such a worrier.
